The Faculty of Surgical Trainers is delighted to announce the recipient of this year's FST Medal. The FST Medal has been created to recognise and celebrate the work of exceptional trainers.
Excellent surgical trainers play an instrumental role in teaching, mentoring and inspiring the next generation of trainee surgeons. Although there are differences in approach, personality and technique among trainers, common themes exist for those that truly shine as examples of exceptional education and training.
The Faculty of Surgical Trainers has awarded its FST Medal to Mr Mike Silva in recognition of his influence on education and training from undergraduate to senior postgraduate education.
Mr David O’Regan, Surgical Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, said, “Mike is well known for his tireless efforts in support of the RCSEd regional surgical network in the UK but his passion for surgical training has been an inspiration to many and his support for trainees at all levels has been invaluable. He applies his training expertise at every level of training from medical students to specialist registrars including basic skills to complex laparoscopic skills.”
