The Faculty of Surgical Trainers is pushing the boundaries of surgical education by providing the chance to put into practice performance simulation of music and surgery through a workshop on offer at the International Conference on Surgical Education and Training (ICOSET).
Excellence in surgical education can be encouraged by deliberately seeking outside perspectives and pushing boundaries. This workshop presents an initiative between the UK’s Royal College of Music (Masters of Performance Science) and Imperial College London (Masters of Surgical Education) exploring immersive simulation and interdisciplinary experiential learning in surgery and music.
This multi-layered initiative will help surgeon and musician educators:
By using simulation to experience elements of practice, rehearsal and performance in each other’s domains, students were able to engage with practices from a profession normally closed from view. This enabled them to draw out alignments, differences and opportunities for innovation in educational practice. The workshop session has been refined in light of student and organizer feedback.
