FST Director Leads On New Surgery Track At AMEE Conference

13 February 2018

RCSEd’s Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Mr Craig McIlhenny, is taking the lead on a new Surgery Track at AMEE (Association for Medical Education in Europe) 2018, one of the world's largest medical conferences. AMEE 2018 will be held 25-29 August in Basel, Switzerland.

The Surgery Track will address best practices and the latest research findings in curriculum development and design, educational strategies, teaching and learning methods, assessment and faculty development in the education of surgery-related competencies.

Mr McIlhenny said: “We are extremely pleased the AMEE will this year include a focus on surgery. This innovative programme will include workshops, talks and round table discussions on the challenges around surgical education and simulation in surgical education. I believe it will be highly beneficial for anyone with an interest in surgical training.”

Professor Ronald M Harden, General Secretary for AMEE said: "The AMEE Annual Conference is now the leading international conference on medical education with about 4000 conference participants. The increasing interest in surgery education will be reflected in a track running through AMEE 2018 Conference in Basel where leading authorities will contribute to symposia, workshops and other sessions. More than 140 abstracts addressing surgery education were submitted for consideration for the short communication and poster sessions".

The programme will have a focus on undergraduate education, postgraduate (residency) education and continuing professional development across all surgical subspecialties.
