FST gets behind BOTA anti-bullying message

6 February 2017

Hammer it outThe Faculty of Surgical Trainers has given its backing to a campaign from BOTA, calling for an end to bullying and undermining behaviour in clinical practice. Hammer it Out aims to create a more positive workplace culture and empower individuals to speak up if they experience or witness unacceptable behaviours.

FST’s Surgical Director Mr Craig McIlhenny said, “The Faculty of Surgical Trainers fully support the Hammer it Out campaign. There is no place in surgical training for bullying or undermining behaviour, and this campaign should apply across all areas of surgical training. As a faculty of trainers, we absolutely believe that demonstration of exemplary professional behaviour, both as a surgeon and as a trainer, is at the heart of our ethos, and we are proud to stand beside BOTA in this regard.”

Mr Simon Fleming, BOTA President, added that Hammer it Out came from a pledge by BOTA to act on feedback from its membership; "Having identified these unacceptable behaviours, our goal is to begin a 'tectonic' culture change - slow to start, but impossible to stop. We recognise that we can’t change the NHS, but we can change the culture within trauma and orthopaedics. We can start a dialogue, get our house in order, and aim to inspire others to do the same. I have never been prouder of the orthopaedic community, for leading on this and have been humbled by the amount of support we have received, from across surgery and our wider community.”
