FST’s director writes for Urology News

1 September 2016

The FST’s Surgical Director, Craig McIlhenny has written an opinion piece on modern surgical training for the autumn edition of Urology News.

Highlighting the challenges faced by those trying to provide excellent training to new generations of surgeons, Mr McIlhenny said “There is no acknowledgement of the work we put in to deliver high quality training; the expectation is that you will fit this in around your service delivery, in a climate with increasing pressure on throughput and fiscal scarcity. Having formal time in your day and job plan to train is the exception rather than the rule, and there is no defined trainer career path, as say compared to academic surgery. This needs to change."

Mr McIlhenny, who is a Consultant Urologist for NHS Forth Valley in Scotland, goes on to explain that the FST was launched in 2013 to achieve better recognition for surgical trainers, providing them with support and guidance, adding: “As surgeons we all need to stand up for quality training, and to ensure that being a trainer is valued properly, rewarded appropriately and performed with excellence.”
