An Interview with FSTEd Fellow, Dr Sukri Rahman

The Faculty of Surgical Trainers is proud to welcome its first Fellow from Indonesia, Dr Sukri Rahman. In addition to its many members in the United Kingdom, the FST has a global platform of over 100 Associates, Members and Fellows in 25 countries around the world. Promoting the highest standards in surgical training is a global objective and the FST invites everyone with an interest in surgical education and training to join their community.

Dr Rahman works as a Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist Head and Neck Surgeon at Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital in Padang, Indonesia. He is also the Director of the Residency Training Programme of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University

Dr Rahman spoke to us about his interest in the FST and the skills and expertise he hopes to bring to the Faculty.

What initially made you want to be involved with the Faculty of Surgical Trainers?

I have joined various associations and attended several meetings in the field of medical education, but the majority were limited to general medical education. While I was looking for development for surgical education, I found this Faculty. I was interested in joining because this Faculty aims to support surgeons as trainers in developing excellent surgical training while giving excellent and safe patient care. In addition, this Faculty also recognises achievements in surgical education. It is an honour to be recognised by the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of RSCEd for my achievements and commitment to surgical education and training.

What awards and training activities are you currently involved in?

I am currently the Director of the Residency Training Programme of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University in Padang, Indonesia. I was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Award at the Faculty of Medicine Andalas University in 2015. During the Indonesia National Education Day on 2 May 2017, I was also honoured to receive the Satya Lencana Karya award from the President of the Republic of Indonesia for my ten years of distinguished service.

Can you tell us about the skills and expertise you will bring to the Faculty to help develop theadvancementof surgical education andtraining?

I have been teaching in a residency training programme for more than ten years in a developing country. I would love to contribute to the development of surgical education and training, as well as the promotion of excellent surgical training while giving excellent and safe patient care through my engagement with the FSTEd.
