The FST has welcomed news that the GMC is to roll out a new national survey of trainers in March 2016. The plans were announced following publication of the results of a pilot survey of four regions in England.
Mr Craig McIlhenny, the FST’s Surgical Director, said: “Although this is a pilot survey, the findings reinforce the issues the FST is already addressing and highlights one of the most important challenges for trainers - a lack of formal recognition for the job that they do in providing high-quality training, and so ensuring safe and excellent care for our patients.”
The FST believes the launch of the full national survey will ultimately help to improve the quality of training and patient care, but in the meantime is discussing the results of the pilot with the GMC as they pertain to surgery.
